Understanding Family-Based Immigration

Broadly speaking, family-based immigration enables qualifying individuals to bring immediate relatives and extended family members to the United States through a sponsor system. This possibility is open to US citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPRs, also known as green card holders), refugees, and asylees.

The requirements vary based on the sponsor's status and the sponsor's relationship with the relative they wish to sponsor.  For example, US citizens may petition for fiancé(e) visas, but green card holders, refugees, and asylees cannot.
